However, since September 2020, the centre has also played host to the colleges new ‘Rodent Rescue’ initiative, which has seen staff and students rescue and provide care for over 30 rodents, a number which continues to grow.

Staff at the college have so far rescued six guinea pigs, four degus, four rats, three gerbils, two hamsters, two chinchillas, an African pygmy hedgehog and 12 mice. Former student and current Curriculum Technician Briony Stokes said:

“Any animals that come into the rescue will stay there for their whole life. A lot of the Animal Management students want to work within animal rescue centres in the future, so this is a great opportunity for them to gain some practical experience and insight into their future careers.”

The rodents are housed in a large converted storage unit with room to rescue and care for more animals.

More information, including regular updates and videos, can be found via the Oaklands Rodent Rescue page on Facebook, here.
